The most important thing: You generally don't need compulsory statutory insurance for a normal bike in Spain. Nevertheless, harming other people and losing an expensive bike are two very different risks. Therefore, check liability and protection for your own bike separately.
Bicycle, Pedelec or S-Pedelec: What is mandatory?
The term “e-bike” alone is not enough to classify it. The decisive factors are drive, performance and switch-off speed. The new traffic rules since October 1, 2026 do not change this.
| Vehicle | Classification | Insurance |
|---|---|---|
| Bicycle without motor | For example, a road bike, city bike or mountain bike. | No general statutory compulsory insurance for private everyday journeys. |
| Rule-compliant Pedelec / EPAC | Maximum 250 W rated continuous power; Assistance decreases and stops before 25 km/h or as soon as you stop pedalling. | Exempt from compulsory VPL insurance. Consider optional cover. |
| S-Pedelec / bike classified as a moped | Other vehicle class; Vehicle documents and registration are crucial. | Pay attention to compulsory vehicle insurance and the requirements of the respective class. |
| E-scooter / VMP | Not a bike and not a normal Pedelec. | Standalone registration and insurance requirements. |
Legal basis: Ley 5/2025, Art. 1 bis and additional provision 1, paragraph 3 c; DGT: Registration of VMP.
If you have a tuned bike, throttle grip or unclear vehicle documents, the vehicle class should be clarified first. An ordinary bicycle policy does not confirm road legality.
Which protection suits your bike?
These types of cover address different risks. Your individual quote and policy terms determine what is actually insured.
Liability
You damage a parked car or injure another person: This is about third-party claims. First, check what your existing personal liability insurance already covers.
Theft
Your bike disappears in front of the café or from the storage room: ask about permitted storage locations, security requirements, compensation limits and evidence.
Accidental damage to your own bike
A fall damages the frame or wheels: ask about coverage for your own bike, excess and calculation of the replacement value.
Assistance and personal accident cover
If you need help after a breakdown or injury, check recovery arrangements, assistance along your route and personal accident benefits separately.
MAPFRE also lists electric bicycles and assistance for BiciMás as well as selectable benefits for theft and bicycle damage. Which combination is available for your bike must be confirmed in the individual offer. Official product information for MAPFRE BiciMás.
Theft: questions to ask before taking out cover
- Must the frame be locked to a fixed object?
- Which locks are accepted, and do you need proof of purchase?
- Does the protection also apply on the street, in the communal basement, in the garage or in the holiday home?
- Is only the entire bike insured or is a separately stolen battery also insured?
- Is settlement based on replacement as new or current market value? Is there an excess?
Spanish policies do not necessarily cover “robo” and “hurto” in the same way. Ask whether theft without violence or forced entry is included. MAPFRE explains the difference between robo and hurto.
Keep your receipt, frame number, recent photographs and proof of purchase for the lock. After a theft, report it to the police and notify your insurer in accordance with your policy’s reporting requirements.
How much does bike insurance cost in Spain?
Basic liability cover cannot be compared directly with a policy that includes theft cover for a valuable e-bike. To provide an accurate premium, the agency needs details of your bicycle and the cover you require.
- Bicycle: Type, model, age and proven value.
- Usage: Everyday life, leisure, training, racing or work.
- Storage location: Street, apartment, garage or shared storage room.
- Coverage: Liability, theft, damage, assistance and excess.
- Territorial limits: Spain, other countries and length of stay.
Compare quotes on the basis of equivalent cover and compensation limits. We do not quote a flat premium that could misleadingly suggest comprehensive cover for every bicycle.
Resident, holidaymaker or sports cyclist?
Permanently in Spain
State your actual place of residence and ask for confirmation that your cover is suitable. Check for overlap with personal liability insurance and home contents insurance before taking out additional cover.
Holidays and rental bikes
When renting a bike, ask about excesss, theft, personal liability and exclusions in the rental agreement. The duration of travel and international protection are crucial for the bike you bring with you.
Road bike, MTB and professional use
Explicitly mention training, events, competitions or delivery work. Check whether assistance services can reach you away from paved roads. Private leisure cover does not automatically include every type of use.
This information will help with your request
- Bike type, brand, model, purchase date and purchase price.
- For e-bikes: rated continuous power, assistance cut-off speed and vehicle class.
- Place of residence in Spain, usual storage location and type of use.
- Required cover and any existing policies.
You can add these details to the contact form. Your enquiry is non-binding; the partner agency will assess whether cover can be offered and on what terms.

Frequently asked questions
Is bike insurance mandatory in Spain since October 2026?
No, the transport reform does not introduce a general insurance requirement for normal bicycles. Pedelecs up to 250 W that comply with the rules and which phase out pedal assistance before 25 km/h are exempt from the new VPL insurance requirement. Different rules apply to S-Pedelecs and e-scooters.
Is my e-bike automatically insured under private liability insurance?
Only your policy can answer this. Ask your insurer to confirm cover for your exact bicycle type, use in Spain and permanent residence. Liability insurance does not automatically cover theft of or damage to your own bike.
Can I insure a road bike or mountain bike?
To check, please provide the model, purchase price and usage. Recreational rides, training, competitions and commercial use may be treated differently. Participation in a race is not automatically included.
Does my German bicycle insurance apply in Spain?
Check the geographical scope, the permitted travel duration and the regulations for permanent residence in Spain. Holiday travel cover is not an automatic guarantee for a move.
Are the battery and motor of my e-bike also insured?
Ask separately about theft, accidental damage, electronic damage and wear and tear. An insured e-bike does not automatically mean that any battery or motor damage will be covered.
