Car insurance in Spain – obligation, costs, comprehensive insurance & important differences

Anyone who drives a car in Spain needs at least a valid motor vehicle liability insurance. But that's not the end of the matter: Plans vary greatly in terms of assistance (breakdown assistance), glass damage, theft, excess and the quality of claims settlement. If you come from Germany, some terms seem similar - the details are not.

This guide will explain to you clearly how car insurance works in Spain, what it costs, which components make sense and what you should pay attention to as an emigrant or second home owner.

1. Is car insurance compulsory in Spain?

Yes. At least liability (Seguro Obligatorio / Responsabilidad Civil) is required by law. It covers damage that you cause to third parties - for example to other vehicles, people or other people's property. Without valid liability insurance, there is a risk of fines and, in an emergency, very expensive consequences.

What is included in the mandatory coverage?

  • Personal injury to third parties
  • Property damage to third parties
  • Consequential financial losses (depending on the plan/scope)

2. What types of coverage are there?

Liability (compulsory)

Basic coverage. Good for very old vehicles - but be careful: quality and coverage amounts differ.

Extended third-party cover (depending on the provider “Terceros ampliado”)

Additional protection for common risks such as theft, glass breakage or fire. In coastal regions, glass damage and parking collisions are not uncommon - it's worth taking a closer look at services and excesses.

Comprehensive cover (All Risk / “Todo riesgo”)

Supplements extended third-party cover to include self-inflicted damage to your own vehicle (and often vandalism). Particularly useful for newer cars, financing/leasing or high vehicle value.

Asistencia / roadside assistance cover

In Spain, assistance is an important component: breakdown assistance, towing, onward or return journey, replacement vehicle. The scope of services depends very much on the plan (kilometer limits, partner workshops, alternative mobility).

3. How much does car insurance cost in Spain?

The premiums depend heavily on the driver profile, vehicle, region and desired services. Rough orientation (per year):

  • Liability: approx. 250 – 600 €
  • Extended third-party cover: approx. 350 – 900 €
  • Comprehensive cover: approx. 600 – 1,800 €

Important price factors

  • Driver: Age, driving experience, previous damage
  • Vehicle: value, engine size, repair costs, risk of theft
  • Region: Damage frequency (e.g. busy coastal areas)
  • Parking: Garage vs. street
  • Excess: higher = usually cheaper
  • Services: Assistance, glass, theft, vandalism

4. Typical pitfalls (that cost money)

Drivers covered by the policy

Who is allowed to drive? If you provide incorrect information, it can cause trouble in the event of a claim. If partners or family members drive regularly, this should be clearly stated in the contract.

Excess

Very low excess makes the plan expensive; very high ones can hurt in the event of damage. Rule of thumb: choose one so that you can pay it without stress in an emergency.

Approved repairer requirement

Partner workshops save premiums, but are not always ideal. If free choice of workshop is important to you, check specifically.

5. Extended third-party cover or comprehensive cover – which is right for you?

  • New car / leasing: comprehensive cover usually makes sense or is mandatory
  • 5-10 years: Extended third-party cover plus good assistance is often optimal
  • Very old: Liability + assistance if the vehicle value is low

6. Checklist in the event of damage (Spain)

  1. Secure the scene of the accident, if necessary call the police/emergency in the event of personal injury.
  2. Take photos (positions, damage, license plates, surroundings).
  3. Fill out the accident report (if possible) and exchange data.
  4. Report damage promptly, observe deadlines.

7. FAQs

Can I use my German no-claims bonus?

Often yes, with proof. The recognition is not always 1:1 - but it's worth a try.

Is there monthly payment?

Many providers offer payment in installments, sometimes with a surcharge.

What exactly is “Asistencia”?

Roadside assistance/assistance. The scope varies greatly - especially when it comes to towing kilometers and alternative transport.

Official MAPFRE documents

Motor vehicle insurance – German product brochure

The official German-language MAPFRE brochure provides an overview of possible components such as liability, legal protection, driver insurance, roadside assistance, glass, fire, theft and comprehensive insurance.

Brochure status: July 2022. Services, promotions, discounts and conditions may have changed. The current personalised quote and the current insurance conditions are always binding.

Conclusion

Compulsory coverage is rarely enough for a good feeling of security. For most drivers, liability + assistance is the minimum, often supplemented by glass/theft (extended third-party cover). Comprehensive insurance makes sense for newer cars. What is important is not just the price, but also the service in the event of a claim.

Important information for German emigrants in Spain

It is only after moving to Spain that many Germans realize that insurance policies differ significantly from Germany in terms of structure, services and terms. The topics of Seguridad Social, private supplementary insurance, excesses and regional differences in prices and conditions are particularly relevant.

Our tip: Check contracts not only for the price, but also for the coverage amount, exclusions and service in the event of a claim. A precise comparison is particularly worthwhile when it comes to car, house and health insurance.

Avoid typical mistakes

  • Organize insurance coverage very late
  • Assume that German policies are automatically sufficient in Spain
  • Overlook important additional services such as roadside assistance, glass, water damage or liability
  • Do not have any documents or photos of the damage ready in case of an emergency
